EPIC® Pediatric Obesity started in June, 2011 with the mission of educating professionals about current science, practical office tools, and guidelines relevant to pediatric overweight and obesity. Although the original few years of the EPIC® Pediatric Obesity Program focused on pediatric and family medicine practices, Grand Rounds, pediatric and family medicine residency training, and similar medically-oriented audiences, our focus has widened to include the variety of professional audiences concerned with multi-faceted issues of pediatric overweight and obesity.
Our focus is family wellness. Content of our interactive Power Point discussion includes food, diet, beverages, sugar, portion sizes – as one would expect – and also sleep, mental health, screen time, and activity with an emphasis on outdoor activity when feasible. All these areas have an evidence base connecting them with weight and well-being. For a given individual and family, any one of these areas may be a fruitful one for intervention.
Achievable goals, arrived at through patient- and family-centered motivational interviewing, can be identified and carried out.
Many different professional groups, including medical, are essential for helping turn the tide of pediatric overweight and obesity.
EPIC® Pediatric Obesity is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
